After hiking Huang Shan, our next stop was the little village of Hong Cun. Here I am on the main bridge that takes you into the village. This is a city that has been in existence since the 1400’s! A lot of the architecture that comes to mind when we think of China originated in this area. Those who were more wealthy that lived in these areas would travel to different regions of China and build homes and buildings similar to what they had been accustomed to before. This style caught on and became very popular. The buildings we are looking at in this picture are largely original with only minor changes in renovation.
What I thought was most interesting was how upon first entering Hong Cun, there were street vendors all over trying to sell stuff. But, once you got back far enough, all of that was gone, and you felt as though you had been transported back four or five centuries. This man is still harvesting rice the way his ancestors did way back in the day.
